Looks like there's a chance of rain tonight. If so, the Friday Night Music will be indoors in the 19th Hole from 6:30 pm-8:30 pm. When we have the music indoors we don't have the typical kid's activities. Assuming weather is good, we'll be by the pool with the kid's buffet and raffle (decision on where to place the entertainment is made around 5:00 pm depending on current weather conditions). Happy Hour Drinks and $4.50 Appetizer Menu 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm!

Plan on coming out either way to hear Destiny Brown - you'll be glad you did. She's a great musician!

FITNESS CENTER CLOSED

In order to bring in the new fitness equipment, we obviously need to remove the old equipment. Removal is being done beginning Wednesday (June 22) late afternoon through Thursday evening. The new equipment is scheduled for delivery on Friday. Therefore, the entire fitness center will be closed to Member use beginning late Wednesday through all of Friday. We anticipate being up and running on Saturday. We apologize for the inconvenience, but are pleased to upgrade to brand new, state-of-the-art equipment for the Membership.

It's not too late if your child(ren) are still interested in participating in Saugahatchee's Discovery Camp. We have two sessions: June 14-17 and July 12-15. Each camper will experience instruction in the following:

Last week we built a really nice wooden structure over the baby pool. It is large enough to cover not only the pool area, but provides plenty of shade for those watching the little ones.

Also new this summer is the snack bar window with granite counter. This makes it super easy to get quick snacks like ice cream, smoothies, chips, and drinks (orders for Grill food will still be available and served poolside). A TV has also been installed inside for catching up on the latest sporting events.

LADIES' LOCKER ROOM
Due to the very generous monetary donation AND hands-on help (literally!) by the SCC Ladies' Golf Association the Ladies' Locker Room is currently undergoing a much needed cosmetic facelift. Thanks to these ladies (and Club management and board for matching funds and approval) we can all enjoy a prettier and more functional room soon. Thanks also to Joan Asbury, for offering her professional suggestions and guidance.

The floral wallpaper has been stripped (YAY!) and the game plan is finalized for the design.

The walls have been texturized and painted the same blue as the ladies' restroom upstairs and prefunction room.

Wow! First peek at the new vanity. When completed it will look like a custom piece of furniture.

MEN'S CARD ROOM

The downstairs kitchen is undergoing renovation that will soon serve as the Men's Card Room. This will allow a more private environment for the daily card players, as well as provide more seating in the 19th Hole for diners.

The walk up window has been replaced with a door. Canned lighting has been inserted in the ceiling.

The walls are being painted a rich brown that matches other walls throughout the Clubhouse. Two full-length doors have been installed and they are gorgeous. They go into the 19th Hole and the Grill.

We will keep you posted on the progress of each project!

We are then heading to the Coliseum to follow behind the AU Alumni buses. The "cancelation" of Tiger Walk is not an issue, according to the AU Alumni so we are all leaving early as scheduled. RIDE THE BUS WITH US
TO TUSCALOOSA!

The bus trip to Tuscaloosa is on! After speaking with highway troopers and University personnel, it has been determined that up to 1 hour should be added to the regular travel time due to the overwhelming popularity of the game, and also because it falls on Black Friday. Traffic will definitely be heavy en route! With that in mind we will leave earlier than first projected. The bus will be at the Club at 5:30 am - and will depart at 5:45 am. We are teaming up with the Auburn Alumni and will be following their buses - including Auburn's marching band's bus for a carvan up to the game. Their buses are departing at 6:15 am from Beard Eaves Memorial parking lot so we MUST leave Saugahatchee on time. We are expected to arrive at Tuscaloosa by 10:45 am in time for the Tiger Walk at Gate 20 at 11:15 am. Kick-off is at 1:30 pm. The bus will leave Tuscaloosa 1 hour after the game ends, returning to Saugahatchee Country Club.

Last Friday Saugahatchee was represented at downtown Opelika's "On the Tracks" event. A huge thanks goes to Chef Tom, Harry Greenlee, Chris Hollis and their teams for setting everything up and making it happen. Even after putting in a full day's work, your Saugahatchee staff put in another 6 hours, complete with smiles for our customers. If you have never been to this event you really need to try and make it. They have it twice a year, once in the spring, once in the fall. Mainstreet never looked so alive! Tents lined the closed off streets and attendees enjoyed food vendors (like us!), live music, various wines, and the shops. It was great seeing some of our Club Members at the event, as well as meeting new folks and introducing them to Saugahatchee's famous bread pudding! Next "On The Tracks" is Friday, April 15th...save the date!

in the Chattahoochee Valley

On Sunday, August 29, The Ledger-Enquirer in Columbus, Georgia printed a list of the single best golf holes in the area, including: Columbus - Georgia, Pine Mountain - Georgia, Auburn/Opelika, and Eufaula -Alabama. Of all private and public courses, only one other course (Green Island in Columbus) scored better. In the Auburn/Opelika area the following were considered the best: Saugahatchee received 3, Auburn Links received 1, Robert Trent Jones received 2, and AU Club received 1.

We know our Members are proud of Saugahatchee and with good reason. We are pleased to offer our Members and their guests the very BEST that East Alabama has to offer. A big thanks goes to course superintendent Buddy Williams, Tripp Barnes, and their entire crew!

To start the weekend off right my husband and I decided to relax after work Friday night in the 19th Hole and try out the brand new Happy Hour. I will preface by letting you know that just the day before I did get to sample Chef Nick's new items, along with several other staff, so we would know exactly what the new menu would entail - ultimately helping us to assist our Members with their own selections. Although everything had great presentation and tasted really great, I knew right away which selection I wanted my spouse to try - The Onion Rings(You'll notice I capitalized them to show their importance). If you are a fan of the ring, these are truly to die for. They are special and perfect - without relying on any fancy seasoning. I heard someone else that night say they were some of the best they'd ever had. They don't come alone - they share a plate with another really, really tasty grilled-to-perfection treat...two beef kabobs....but the homemade Rings were - in our opinion - the hand-battered stars of the show. At only $4.50 for the plate it was enough to keep us happily filled as our dinner. With Happy Hour drink prices you can't do better than that anywhere! Make plans to come in next week and forget making dinner that night...a couple of these appetizers and you'll be good to go! Remember that we can also provide childcare, given a couple days notice. Okay, Round II for my personal Friday night Happy Hour. This photo is actually from a neighboring table who had the right idea....order several different items and share (their loaded Nachos were on the way). At such a great price you can afford to do lots of that. The plate on the right are the whole mushrooms (which I also ordered this time). My husband stuck with last week's favorite...the Beef Kabob and Onion Rings. He's the type that once he finds something he likes he stays with it. I'm the adventurous one...I broke out and had the Fried Mushrooms. Half plate of Mushrooms with half plate of the Rings. That's what's so great about a private Club - it may not be on the menu like that, but the Chef will make it happen if that's what you want. YAY! The fried mushrooms are whole, not sliced, and really good. I've found that some restaurants make these and they are way too rich...not so here. Hope to see you this week - remember, Happy Hour is now four days a week, Tuesday - Friday from 4 - 6 pm.

What a great time we had Saturday night! We had two wonderful bands - Martha's Trouble (AMAZING vocals by Jen Slocumb!) and Party Crasher's (terrific dance band from Columbus, GA) in the ballroom. We even had line dance intruction before the dance band, which was a fun new thing. Along with nice comments about the live music we heard lots of great things about the food - thanks to Nick and his staff. It was great to see everyone enjoying themselves, meeting new friends, and catching up with old friends.

CHALLENGE CUP

The 2nd Annual Challenge Cup golf tournament between Saugahatchee and Moore's Mill took place at Saugahatchee this year. The two 12-man teams played in between small spouts of rain Friday, October 23rd. Although Moore's Mill was ahead the first two rounds, in the end it was a tie. A very fun day of friendly competitiveness and camaraderie. The trophy will remain at the home of last year's winners....Saugahatchee Country Club.

Town Hall Meeting Recap

A Town Hall Meeting was held to allow a venue for Members to voice comments and concerns, as well as hear from department heads and the board of directors to learn more about the current state of the Club. Here are some highlights:

Everyone agreed the golf course is in fantastic shape - better than seen in many years, which is always a great accomplishment, but with required budget cuts is especially impressive. In order to keep it that way our Members and guests must be mindful to help take care of it by repairing ball marks and filling divots.

The executive chef position has been replaced with Nick (who has been with Saugahatchee for some time, and worked with Patrick) and Justin, working together to make banquets and overall dining experiences what one would expect of a fine country club. Nick and his staff proved they are up to the task with the recent Music & Food Festival. He is doing a tremendous job and the transition has been seamless and very positive for the Club.

More effort will be placed on creating additional golf tournaments next year, as well as making them bigger and better.

Membership is up, and accounting for all gains and losses we are 14 Members above where we had originally projected we'd be at this time. A new Membership promotion will be in effect for the month of October, 2009 - called ROCKTOBER. It will allow those applying for membership, as well as referring Members, some nice discounts. It's all luck of the draw, but everyone participating wins. Please review the October Smoke Signal - or contact Kimberly - for details.

There are only a few dates left in December for holiday parties - and only one Friday night - so if you plan to hold an event please call Harry as soon as possible. Harry also reported that he's been busy booking events for 2010 and several are non-member banquets. The important thing to remember is that our Members always come first regarding date selections (if two people wanted the same room on the same date) and that non-members are charged additional fees, such as room rentals, etc. that members are not charged.

After cuts and careful monitoring in every department, financially we are now meeting budget in many areas - and even exceeding in a couple - and are on track to meet budget for end of year.

The board acknowledged their pleasure in the hard work and accomplishments of the management staff, who has been asked to do more with less. With the dissolved relationship with PCA early this year - who served as an outsourced management company over the Club - Anita was acknowledged as having taken on a greater demand and role, of which she has done well.

The Members thanked the board of directors for their governance and commitment.
